The goal of sustainable development — a good life for all people — still lies far off, even though the knowledge, technologies, innovative capacity and wealth needed for it already exist. Political action must be guided by this goal — but how? The path to a just world can only be reached in an open and democratic society: through a shared struggle for a future that can be answered for by all. Yet today we see that democracy, the rule of law and science in particular are increasingly under pressure and need to be defended. How can we strengthen trust in these institutions and develop them further? These and other questions were discussed at the symposium "Friends of the Open Society" and form the central content of this interview series, which we produced for the IASS.
