Illustrated cross-section graphic showing agriculture, city and industry above the groundwater

2020

The depletion of drinking-water resources is a major problem almost everywhere in the world. At the same time, heavy rainfall and flooding are becoming more frequent, bringing huge volumes of water that we cannot store. Seven DEEPWATER-CE project partners are working together to develop a shared strategy for managing water resources, including the retention of excess water from periods of heavy rainfall so that it can be used to replenish groundwater. To protect Central European water resources, which are threatened by climate change and competing uses, the project partners have developed an implementation framework for controlled groundwater recharge — so-called Managed Aquifer Recharge solutions. MANAGED AQUIFER RECHARGE (MAR) is a practical approach for storing surplus surface water and precipitation from water-rich periods in aquifers, for use during drought phases. The animated film presents the Managed Aquifer Recharge methods and solutions developed by the Interreg project DEEPWATER-CE to an interested audience in an engaging and easily understandable way.
