The Challenge

How can short films get early years educators excited about the topic of “Education for Sustainable Development” and inspire them to try engaging with sustainability in everyday daycare life?

Our Approach

In making our films, we did not treat sustainability as a fixed goal but as a process of searching and learning that needs narratives and images that make sustainable ways of living, values, attitudes and stories tangible. Our practice-oriented films show that Education for Sustainable Development is not just an abstract concept but an exciting field of learning close to everyday life.

Special Focus: Filming with Children

When filming with young children in particular, it is essential to proceed respectfully and sensitively and to build a trusting atmosphere that allows children to express themselves freely and follow their natural impulses. Because we have many years of experience filming with families and in daycare settings, we succeeded in making the children’s perspective tangible.

The result is seven authentic, multi-layered films that give voice to the impressions and experiences of children and education professionals alike. Each film has a different focus: whether it is the use of renewable energy, waste separation and reduction, sustainable mobility or healthy eating, the films help spark enthusiasm among education professionals and daycare managers for engaging more with ESD and trying the concept out in their own settings.
